smack is a Source Managed Application Compilation kit similar to gentoo's
"portage" and "emerge" written in c++ utilizing the STL libraries and as few
extraneous libraries as possible. At the time of this writing (10/2006)
smack relies only on the libstdc++ library as an external library. Unlike
portage/emerge, smack is designed to be distribution and OS independent.
While it is aimed at GNU/Linux desktop, portable, and server systems it
should also be usable on Win32 and MacOSX systems as well. Currently, smack
is being developed by one person (Elden Armbrust) with hopes that smack will
gain a significant audience with users looking to gain as much performance
and stability from their systems as possible.
